Why not head North this weekend?

Not fond of crowds? According to census reports, Phoenicia, N.Y., a quaint village in the beautiful Catskills, has a population of 309, but there's lots to explore. If bucolic country living is your fancy, take a leisurely drive to the Phoenicia Flea on May 23 /24, from 11 - 7, and introduce yourself to Christina, from Hudson Naturals, All Natural Skin Care . Your skin will love you for it.

Out of My Studio: A Walk in Woodstock

'A Walk in Woodstock' baby fabric book by SO Handmade

I have been busy in my studio developing, printing and making my new fabric baby book  'A Walk in Woodstock'. To mark its launch I thought an actual walk in Woodstock would be in order on this beautiful spring day.

Woodstock has many facets to which I pay homage in my book including its musical heritage, the famous Sunday drum circles, the Woodstock Windchimes and the peace movement. But in recent times many wonderful new stores and cafes have opened to appeal to visitors and locals alike.
A Walk in Woodstock

New eatery Shindig is situated right in the heart of the village and offers 'an open door, a warm seat, and a much needed sip and nibble'. Organic, local and seasonal ingredients are lovingly prepared by Chef Page Moll into heartwarming comfort food just like your Mom used to make.

Amongst the exciting new stores is a little gem called 'Shop little House'. Owner JoJo Ans has a wonderful eye for combining fine vintage with modern Americana with artisan made gifts and homewares including those of our own HVEtsy team member Hudson Naturals.

Woodstock Music Shop
Two wonderful stores in Woodstock will be carrying my book The Golden Notebook and Illuminated Baby so call in and have a look!

Hope to see you in Woodstock soon!

Good Luck and Good Making!

Let's Visit: The Basha Kill Wildlife Management Area

We love living in the Hudson Valley! In addition to sharing the goings-on with the group, we'd like to also share some of our favorite places to visit in the area for fun, inspiration, and exploring.  Today we start with Arwen from Arwen Designs with a visit to The Basha Kill Wildlife Management Area.

Sullivan County is home to thousands of acres of beautiful woodlands, parks, and nature preserves. Only a few hours from New York City, it is a great place to get away for a weekend and discover what nature has to offer.

The Basha Kill Wildlife Management Area is nestled between the Shawagunk and Catskill Mountains, and consists of over 3000 acres of wetlands. It is a natural wetlands, restored in the 1970’s by the DEC. It offers a wide range of scenery and activities. You can park on Haven Rd for an amazing view of the wide expanse of water surrounded by mountain ranges, or you can hike down one of the many trails through lush forests and waterside promenades full of wildflowers. Bring a canoe or kayak to explore places only accessible by water. The Catskill region is known for excellent trout fishing, but there are also over 30 species of fish in the water, and acres of shoreline to fish from, although the best spots are in a boat.

The Basha Kill is a haven for bird watchers, and there are small tours available. Over 220 species of birds have been sighted, including the great blue heron, eagles, ducks, hawks, and numerous songbirds. The area is also home to at least 200 species of native wildflowers.

One of the best things about the Basha Kill is that it is never too crowded. It is one of the lesser known wildlife areas, and combined with the vast area to explore, you can often hike an entire trail only meeting one or two people.

If quiet nature trips are something you enjoy, consider a visit to the Basha Kill region of New York State!

Where To Find the Hudson Valley Etsy Team This Weekend!

Okay, I know it's Thanksgiving weekend. Now's the perfect time to ask yourself whether you want to face seething crowds in big-box stores at some ungodly hour to buy mass-produced consumer units shipped in from overseas, or to support your local small businesses, independent crafters and artisans, and boost your local economy in the process. If you're reading this, I think I know what you might choose, you smart, socially-, environmentally-, and aesthetically-conscious person! You're so right. And here's what the Hudson Valley Etsy Team is doing to help you along:

Virginia of Ceruleanblue will be showcasing her ceramics at the Garrison Art Center in Garrison, NY from November 19 through 27 (A whole week? How lucky are you?) from 10 am until 5 pm daily.

Kathy of Gnorasaurus heads up to the City Center in Saratoga Springs, NY for the Saratoga Center for the Family's 36th Annual Holiday Craft Festival on Saturday, November 26 from 10 am until 4:30 pm.

I hear a rumor that they will be in the back room, with a fantastic local chocolatier. Now that's one-stop shopping!
