I Thought I was Too Savvy To Get Scammed

I pride myself on being pretty savvy. Hey, I grew up in New York City, went to college at 16 and have traveled the world. I thought I could see through all the ruses but here I am, shamefacedly confessing to the fact that I got scammed. I’m telling this story in hopes it will save some of my fellow small business owners from falling prey.

I got an email from a gentleman from Singapore who asked if my business took Credit Cards. There were three specific products he wanted produced in bulk. The order totaled over 100 pieces. It all sounded legit; particularly because of the specificity of his order. However, I called Square, who processes my Credit Card transactions and asked about any precautions I should take before putting this order through. I was told to just make sure my account was Credited with the funds and as long as they notified me that the funds were in my account, there should not be any problem. Sadly, that was not the case.

I worked for two weeks to fill the order. I had already been paid upfront. Still, there was a nagging anxiety about the transaction.

Getting a Handle on Shipping Supplies

My methods for packing, shipping and tracking inventory has evolved in the 12 years I've been selling online. I put care into packing and shipping my orders, I want buyers to feel like they're receiving a gift when the mail arrives, but it's a time consuming task requiring organization and precision. Below are five of my favorite supplies and services I use to streamline tedious task of getting my orders packed up and shipped out.

Dymo Label Printer

This was a fairly big purchase since it's a bit of a luxury item, but I'm so glad I made the investment. It saves me ink toner, paper and time. The only ongoing cost is for blank labels, which you can buy from Amazon ($13.99 for 220 labels). Why do I love this label maker so much? I can print my Etsy order labels directly from my Etsy dashboard and immediately stick it on the padded envelope. No more cutting out the paper and taping it down. I also use the printer for Ebay and Yerdle labels.

EcoEnclose

I love EcoEnclose! Made in the USA, they provide recyclable, biodegradable and compostable packing materials - and all of there products are designed to encourage re-use before being recycled. One of my favorite products include the 100% Recycled Poly Mailer, which are made from 100% recycled content and have a dual adhesive strip, which allows reuse prior to being recycled. I also use the 100% Recycled Flap & Seal Bags  - now I have way less guilt when I place my products in a plastic bag and then place it inside a poly padded envelope. There customer service is also really great.

Uline

Sometimes I don't have time to go the eco-friendly route and I just need boxes, and I need them tomorrow because I didn't plan ahead. Uline will arrive next day, prices are great, and they have everything under the sun when it comes to shipping supplies. The cons? You have to buy in bulk (requires storage) and they have very few options for those of us looking to reduce our carbon footprint.

I'm constantly trying to perfect the ultimate storage solutions for everything in my small house. Shipping supplies tend to take up a lot of storage space and they're not necessarily things you want on display (although you can find lots of pretty solutions on Pinterest). But mostly you just don't want to be wasting time hunting down your packing tape and scissors.

I've found that the simplest way to organize is to have "shipping & handling only" supplies and to keep those all in one basket or shelf. I have tape, scissors, cards that can only be used for shipping - no stealing those scissors to open a bag of frozen corn. I keep one shelf above my desk stocked with envelopes and one drawer filled with my poly bags and hang tags. If I buy in bulk I keep most of it in my attic and just fill my shelves/drawers when I run low.

Do you have any tips for making an office run more efficiently? Please share, we'd love to hear them!

Creating Success from the Inside Out - 2013 Year in Review

One of the things I have learned about goal setting over the last couple of years is that it's important to take the time before setting new goals to review the previous year's goals.  To take it even further, this time of year is really a great time to look back at the year as a whole and reflect upon the wonderful things that happened to you this year, the challenges you faced, the lessons you learned, and overall the feelings you have about the year.

How do you go about doing this?  There are so many ways.  You could get together with your whole family and make it a yearly tradition.  Make a nice family meal and afterwards have everyone share their yearly highlights, some things that were really hard for them and how they handled it, a few things they accomplished that they are most proud of, and some lessons they learned that they will take with them into the new year.

Or, you could keep it private and journal about your year.  Look at your previous year's resolutions.  Which ones did you achieve?  Which ones are no longer valid - you changed course, went in a different direction, or came up with newer, more meaningful resolutions?  Which goals, if any, were too ambitious or unrealistic?  Which ones did you hit out of the park?  What did you do that helped you to fulfill a resolution?  Conversely, what could you do to help you fulfill resolutions that you missed this past year?

The tool that I used last year and am using this year to help guide me in my year in review, and then to set my goals and intentions for next year, is Leonie Dawson's 2014 Create Your Amazing Year Workbook and Calendar (Life + Business Editions).  These workbooks and calendars are beautiful (you could frame each page!), colorful, inspirational, and each page/exercise helps you to dive deep in a peaceful, respectful way.  The section for reviewing your 2013 year is not only fulfilling, it's fun too.

I print mine out and put them in a three-ring binder so that it's accessible - something that I can review each month to help me reach my goals.

I'm interested in hearing how your 2013 went.  What were your wins?  Overall, how do you feel about the past year?  What lessons did you learn?

5 Things to Do Now to Get Back on the Goal Train

Remember those goals for the year you wrote down back in January when the year was your oyster?  Now that we are almost halfway through 2013, it’s a great time to re-evaluate the goals we set, dust them off if they have fallen to the back of busy schedules, and perhaps re-adjust where necessary.  A high five to all of you who have been actively working on your goals since the beginning of the year.  For those of us who may have let them get away from us, let’s look at 5 ways to get back on the Goal Train.

1.       Review your goals

Read through the goals you wrote down at the beginning of the year.  If you didn’t write them down back then, take some time now and record them.  Put a giant green check mark next to any goals that you have met thus far, along with words of praise for yourself for following through with your game plan.  Come up with some kind of reward for yourself to acknowledge your accomplishments.  If you haven’t met any of your goals yet, don’t let negative energy overtake your thought process.  Be kind to yourself and commit to following through with the following steps.

2.       Re-assess your goals and priorities

For goals that you haven’t met yet, review their order of priority and rewrite your goals so that the most important ones are at the top of the list.  If you have goals that you want to meet but the deadlines you assigned have past, contemplate why you missed those deadlines.  Did something unexpected come up that prevented you from meeting it?  Did you forget that you had that goal?  Was the goal too ambitious or unrealistic?  Is there some kind of fear or apprehension that is preventing you from tackling a particular goal?  You may want to record your thoughts in a journal so you can better understand where you are struggling and therefore be better equipped to address these challenges in the coming months.  Set new deadlines for your goals before moving to the next step.

3.       Make clear and feasible action plans for each of your goals

Breaking down each goal into actionable steps makes achieving big things less daunting, so on a separate sheet of paper for each goal, write down step by step what you need to do to achieve it.  Make sure that each step is a clear-cut task that you can schedule.  Now schedule it!  If you have a calendar that you use, record the steps on the calendar with due dates and reminders.  I use Google Calendar.  Our very own Marilyn from Pulp Sushi introduced me to a great organizational app called Wunderlist.  You can create a separate list for each goal and it will feel so good to cross each step off the list as you complete each task.

4.       Commit to reviewing your goals regularly

It’s really easy to let time go by and not work toward your goals if you forget what they are.   When you review your goals regularly, they will remain at the forefront of your mind and it will be more likely that your daily actions are those that lead you to accomplish those goals.  Added bonus is that if it’s in your conscious mind, then it will be in your sub-conscious mind too.  You may even come up with powerful ways to meet your goals while you are sleeping!  If you often wake up in the morning with ideas, you may want to keep a pen and paper near your bed so that you can write these genius ideas down as soon as you wake up.

5.       Be your own cheerleading squad

Even if you haven’t been able to put a green check mark next to any of your goals, be compassionate with yourself.  Negativity and beating yourself up is not going to help you achieve your goals.  Congratulate yourself on your re-commitment to meeting your goals and think positively about the coming months.  Remember that you are the custodian of your life and you have the power and the will to achieve what you set out to do.

6.       Visualize your success

Spend at least 5 minutes visualizing what your life will be like when you have accomplished your list of goals.  What will it feel like?  How will your life be different?  Don’t just imagine it, but put yourself there and feel the emotions.  Believe that you have already attained your goals.  If you can do this exercise every day, it will reinforce all of the previous steps you have taken to get on the Goal Train and cruise to your destination.

What I realized when I did my re-assessment of my goals, is that I have way too many of them and they were too ambitious.  I didn’t leave any room for real life to happen.  I’m paring down my list and putting more focus on the ones that are the most important to me.

In revisiting your goals, was there anything you changed? What insights did you gain in your evaluation of your progress so far?  What goals have you accomplished this year?  I’d love to hear about your successes and wins!
