2011 was a great year for us and we took some pretty big steps to getting out name out there. We had more events as a team, participated in more markets, had a team tent at HudsonFest, and a Pop-Up store which has been hugely successful! We can't wait to see what 2012 will have in store for us. We continue to grow as a group and as small businesses, here are some of our wishes for the upcoming year....

Our 2nd annual Hudson Valley Etsy Team Holiday Craft Fair is fast approaching - Saturday December 10th! This year we will also have drawings featuring handmade items from our members you can win for yourself or give as a gift. December 10th is the last 2nd Saturday in Beacon before Christmas. It will also be the city's tree lighting later that evening.

For only one dollar ($1) a ticket, you place your ticket in a basket designated for the item you want. The first 35 people get 4 free tix, you write your name and number on the ticket. Winners will be announced by the end of the day and you will be notified. We can call you at the end of the day to pick up your item, or it will be held for you for up to a week.

I don't know about you but this is the time of year that my feet start to get cold. I am a barefoot girl all the way so when I have to start wearing shoes and socks, I am not happy. I defiently walk around barefoot until my frozen toes can take it no more and I look for something really warm with shoeless comfort that isn't socks.

Thanksgiving used to mark the beginning of the holiday season but more and more we seem to slide into the festivities at Halloween. For as much as we enjoy the trick-or-treating kiddies, we also love to dress up ourselves and entertain friends. Whether we're serving a pumpkin martini (I made that up) or hot apple cider, we still want to slip something under our guests' drinks before they set them down on our carefully culled, mid-century modern coffee table. Forget about those dorky paper, ghostly cocktail napkins. Slip one of these silvery webbed coasters under their glass.

Made with hand cut and embossed, white stoneware clay these coasters are made by Noelle at her Moonfire Pottery studio in Saugarties, New York. Dedicated to making functional pottery, Noelle certainly doesn't leave out the fun in functional.

Halloween is a week away but there's no need to stress if you still haven't done your pumpkin carving activities. My boyfriend paints pumpkins for his nephews every Halloween, usually the faces of their favorite super hero characters. I came across some fun ideas from realsimple.com that is fun for the kids and no gooey pumpkin innards need to be gutted.

From now through Sunday, experience a taste of American Craft Week, hosted by Lynn at New Prospect Pottery Studios in Pine Bush, NY . I love this bag. It's really simple - I love this bag! The colors are so warm and smart and the styling is sophisticated. I like a bag that is longer than it is deep (easier to find things, less digging in the depths) and the structure of the round, wool covered handles contrast the loose slouchiness of the bag in a really cool way. Sometime I look at it and I see a Ralph Laurenesque American west kind of style and sometimes I see sturdy Pendleton Adirondack style. I can't think of any color coat that this bag wouldn't compliment. It's so versatile that it would look great on a date in the city or adorable with jeans and a sweater on a stroll across the Beacon bridge.

Fall Fun Festival - Fishkill, NY

The Fishkill Business Association presents

THE FIRST ANNUAL FUN FALL FESTIVAL

This family event will include fall produce from local farmers as well as wines from our local wineries. Baked goods will be there in abundance. Crafters will be there with their goods for the upcoming holidays. There will be music and dance demonstrations.

For the children there will be face painting and pumpkin painting as well as apple bopping. There will be some rides. In other words, there will be something of interest for everyone.

The event will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2011 from 11:00 – 4:00 at the parking lot near Nature’s Pantry on Route 52 in Fishkill.

I think I have said this before in this little column - I love fall. I love everything about it (well, maybe not the hay fever). I love the cooling of the air, I love the light as the sun sinks lower in the sky, I love the slowing down of nature and more than anything, I love the colors. I am a color person thru and thru. While so many people are trying to neutralize colors in their lives ("I'm afraid of color", "I can't pull that off", "I couldn't live with that all the time") I am always looking for the most emotional colors I can. Yes, I said emotional. What visual stimulus is more emotional than color? The colors that mark the seasons, for one, evoke a myriad of emotions. Let's get emotional an take a look at this.

You feel that first snap of cold in the air and what do you want to do? Grab your favorite sweater, scarf, shawl. Some of us want to get out the ole' needles and make something new. Well check this shop out. I can't even single out one item because KnitChix spins their own yarns out of natural fibers and comes up with color and texture combos that take my breath away. I want that one. No, I want this one. And cool names: Acid Tongue, Marmalade Sky, Ring of Fire. The visual is as exciting as the name. Michelle and her baby chick spin and knit up in their Catskills home and what they see is what you get and it is emotional and exciting and you gotta get some!

American Craft Week : October 7-16

The team's own Lynn from New Prospect Pottery will be participating in this year's American Craft Week. This year's American Craft Week celebration, to be held October 7-16, will bring together individuals, small businesses and organizations from all fifty states in recognition of the countless ways handmade objects enrich our daily lives and contribute to our national aesthetic and economy.

Lynn has invitee the Hudson Valley Etsy team to participate will be setting up two tents and her studio to showcase local work for the week. She is located in Pine Bush.

New Prospect Pottery focuses on functional stoneware and porcelain pottery. The pottery exhibits work from three different kilns to add variety to the functional choices available. How Do You Like Them Apples?

It's October, it's the Hudson Valley, and that means one thing-- apple festivals every which way you turn! And this weekend, in between your apple pies, apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple fritters, apple butter, apple bobbing, and apple picking, you can treat yourself to the bounty that is the vibrant craft community in the Hudson Valley.

On Saturday, come to historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz, NY for the Dutch Reformed Church's annual Apple Fest! Kathy from Gnorasaurus will have a booth there along with other top-notch local artists and an amazing array of homemade apple pies, apple desserts, apple fritters, fresh local apples and cider, caramel apples and more. There will also be live entertainment and a book & houseplant sale, with pumpkin painting, animal balloon-making and face painting for the kids. The hours are 10 am - 4 pm, and in the event of rain, the whole thing will be held inside, so how great is that?

Electric Projected

Eletric Projected will be at the intersection of Main Street and East Main in Beacon NY we are shutting down the street and we are going to have a party. When the sun sets 24 animated shorts will be projected onto the facade of the Electric Windows Building. Each animation will be inspired by one of the pieces of art on the building. DJ Bobby Collins will be live mixing during the animations t...o accompany the show. After the animations Bobby C Sound TV will DJ his famous Audio/Viual DJ Sets and continue the projections on the building and everyone will dance in the streets. Bring a lawn chair to watch the show and your dancing shoes. This is going to be an amazing evening!

Have you seen the commercial for TJ Maxx (or is it Marshalls?) of the woman pulling up in an RV truck and dragging random women inside (because they're spending too much on shopping or something), only to find that the inside of the truck is decked out like a chic clothing boutique? This isn't far from reality folks. I have been hearing more about the mobile boutique trend that I had to share it here in case you are new to it too. Who knows, we may start seeing them pop-up at local craft shows in the Valley, why not? Our roads are mobile friendly (just stay off the Taconic!).

I know most people are wistful about letting summer go. I on the other hand gladly wave goodbye and look eagerly toward the first cold snap of fall. I love everything about fall - the change of light as the sun drops lower in the sky, the color blast of the changing leaves, the invigorating cooler air... Most of all, I love the wardrobe change. Yes, it's true. Given the choice between a cozy, soft, over sized sweater or a cotton tank top, I'll take the sweater, hands down. And as much as I love the colors of the changing landscape, I adore the charcoals, blacks, browns, navys, greys, reds, yellows and all colors of coats and hats and gloves and all garments toasty. Even better, these clothes beg for fabulous accessories.

Well here it is. The minute I saw this neckwarmer, I wanted to get my coat out, toss this beautiful yellow and grey (one of my most favorite color combos) cowl on and take the dogs for a walk in the woods. The minute I saw this wall hanging, it evoked all that is good about the end of the summer. The bounty of the harvest - my own vegetable garden, the farmers markets, canning and pies. The apples are coming in and we are gobbling up the last of the corn. Soon we will be picking pumpkins and carving jack-o-lanterns.

Wouldn't this piece look crazy good by the back door of a country cottage? Better yet, hanging it by your back door will make you feel like you are living in the cottage of your dreams. Reclaimed Designs is responsible for this lovely mosaic and to make good even gooder, she uses reclaimed and recycled materials for her cottage style pieces for the home. Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Kathryn Hunter Luciana and I am thrilled to be a new member of the Hudson Valley NY Etsy team. I was born and raised in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York in Orange County. After some vagabond years of moving around NY State and then out West to Arizona, my husband and I moved back to the Hudson Valley to live in the town of Cornwall. I opened my shop on Etsy: Huzzah! Unique Handmade Wearables in 2008, and very much enjoy being a virtual shopkeeper.

What is your professional background? And what led you to your current craft?
How I arrived at this place in my life is kind of a long, winding road, but I’ve always been involved in art in some way. I’ve sewn since I was a pre-teenager, and I’m mostly self-taught. For many years, I was very involved with Fine Art Photography and have shown in quite a few national exhibitions. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature, and worked a bit in publishing, but for the past fifteen-plus years I’ve been working in the theatre business. I’m a member of IATSE, short for International Alliance of Theatrical and State Employees of USA and Canada. My particular niche is wardrobe and costumes, but I’ve also dabbled in scenic design, set decoration and props. Its free-lance work in various venues throughout the area, so my schedule allows me time to work at home a great deal; something I cherish.

I’ve always had an independent, entrepreneurial streak, so maybe that’s what’s brought me to where I am today. Like I mentioned, I’ve always sewn, but about 7 years ago, I decided to learn to knit. My initial motivation was a practical one: I often had periods of time on my hands in my theatre jobs, just waiting for things to happen, so having something very portable, like knitting, seemed like a great way to spend that time. I’m awestruck at the vast array of fibers out there just begging to be made into something beautiful. After learning the basics of knitting, I started felting, and that led me to thinking about making items from repurposed, felted wool garments: bags, dog coats, vase covers, bottle cozies, jewelry. I figured why not try to create a cottage business from this new-found craft? I discovered Etsy at one of the craft events in which I participated, did a bit of research, and opened my shop. My latest endeavor, is adding machine embroidery to my felted items, and designing embroidered leather jewelry. I think the embroidery really makes my accessories unique, and people seem to respond very positively to it.

What inspires you?
Nature, color, beautiful fabrics or yarns, objects I find in the strangest places like thrift shops, yard sales, or even home improvement centers. Also, seeing what other talented artists have created and being amazed. My materials are a blank canvas in front of me and present a puzzle that I have to solve. I rarely use a pattern when I make my up-cycled, felted items. I use many materials that once were something else, like leather belts, wool sweaters, vintage buttons, scraps of material I’ve scavenged, allowing them spark my imagination to create something new. If I do come up against a wall creatively, I usually walk away for a few hours, days or sometimes longer, pick up another project and let the tricky one lie fallow for a while. Then, when I go back to it, things seem to fall into place.

Describe your workspace? When if your favorite time of the day to work?
My workspace consists of a room in my home that houses my sewing machines, tables, supplies, notions and yarn. I have to admit that I’ve spilled over into a smaller room where I have a computer and storage, but I rationalize this by telling myself that’s really my cat’s room because his box is in there. I usually work on sewing and embroidering in the afternoons, and I knit whenever and wherever I can get away with it.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what would you want with you? Any guilty pleasures?
If I were so unfortunate as to be stranded on an island with my supplies, it would have to be a pretty big island. I’d also need my family, including pets, a couple of good friends, electricity and a big, sturdy boat to get us all out of there, because I would need to get back to my guilty pleasures: reality TV, chocolate and wine to name but a few.

Words of wisdom for aspiring artists?
I really don’t feel qualified to give advice to aspiring artists, because I feel I will always be aspiring myself, but I think it’s important to do whatever you can to learn your craft well, and then keep educating yourself. If you have an itch, scratch it, because that itch is trying to tell you something. Improvise, or even change course if something else interests you. Even if you can’t work as often as you’d like due to the daily demands we all have, make sure you give yourself a little time to experiment, research, or simply think.

The mighty oak. I love the wood. The oak was worshiped by the Druids and home to Norse gods. I love the acorn and all that it symbolizes. It holds the potential of great possibilities and its future is strength and grandeur. On top of it all the oak leaf is the ultimate symbol of autumn. Who as a child didn't collect oak leaves and iron them between wax paper or help a kindergarten teacher pin them to a back-to-school bulletin board? Oak leaves just scream, "Hey! Summer's over! There's a great weekend in store for the Hudson Valley! Today, Lynn of 1846 House Soaps will be at the Goshen Farmers Market in Goshen, as she is on the first & third Friday of each month.

Regular readers of the blog may have heard a thing or two about this weekend's Garrison Craft Fair, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday. Look for these Hudson Valley Etsy Team members: Becky of Gemini River Rocks, Kathy of Gnorasaurus, Gwen of Beyond The Picket Fence, Audrey of Molly's Purl and Jess of Knot By Gran'ma . The event takes place rain or shine from 10 am - 5 pm each day. The event features over 90 select artisans and free river rides on the 47-foot sailing sloop, The Woody Guthrie. The food court offers an array of gourmet foods, homemade goodies, and burgers & dogs PLUS Keegan Ales will be pouring its notorious brews. Two exciting exhibitions are featured in the Art Center galleries, Artists' Books by Susan Newmark and Works on Canvas by Moses Hoskins. Live music performances will take place throughout the day. 42nd FINE CRAFTS FAIR IN GARRISON

Last Spring Garrison, New York, was named by Hudson Valley Magazine “One of the ten best places to live.” Decades before that, the court of public opinion named it one of the best river towns to visit in the Hudson Valley. And more that a century before that, its majesty was made clear by the Hudson River painters -- without even using words.

Garrison Art Center has been a part of this unique history and has been bringing art to the area for nearly 50 years. It is locally dubbed the “busiest little Art Center in New York”. According to Hudson Valley Magazine “… Garrison Art Center, housed in a charming old building on the river, is one of the Valley’s most active arts meccas.” The New York Times says it is “a lovely waterfront location known for its popular art classes.”

Each summer brings Garrison Art Center’s much-anticipated Fine Crafts Fair, an intimate affair down by the riverside where 90 select vendors offer unique high quality crafts/fine arts for the body and home. For 41 years visitors have enjoyed the wares of regional artisans, and in recent years -- with the come back of “hand mades” -- collectors, homeowners and those who just have a bent for something unique make their way to this Fair. Visitors also enjoy a gourmet food court (or burgers and dogs), free river rides on the historic 47-foot Sloop Woody Guthrie plus non-stop foot-tapping live music generously supported by The Garrison, Hudson Valley Magazine, M&T Bank and WHUD. Sitting just a stone’s throw from Metro North and right at the edge of the Hudson, Garrison Art Center boasts one of the most famous river views anywhere. This Saturday (August 13th), Etsy Hudson will be joining many others in support of the annual Hudson Black Arts and Cultural Festival. The Festival and Parade are a joyful and creative celebration of the arts, culture and stories of the African-American communities. The event has been organized by grassroots organization Operation Unite the event for the last 19+ years, and has developed from its early roots as a neighborhood block party into a community-wide festival.

Etsy is thrilled to be a sponsor and participant in this year's event, and invite any and all to join us in the Craft Tent at the Waterfront Park in Hudson on from 2:30 - 6pm on Saturday. People of all ages are welcome to come hang out and get their hands dirty (or at least gluey) and create some whimsical and wonderful creations that will be in the theme of the event, "Fairytales and Storytales". If you're interested in helping set up, they'll be there at 11am before heading up Warren St to join the 2pm parade.

This summer, iced coffee has been the beverage of choice in my house. Cold, strong coffee with some creamy milk and a couple of spoons full of sugar. For a few relaxing moments, it's not so hot outside. I saw this creamer/sugar set and imagined how happy I would be to see them sitting next to a tall glass of java. The yellow glaze is so pleasing and the shapes seem they would fit nicely in my hand. Ceruleanblue pottery in Beacon, New York makes elegantly simple everyday items. The glazes have a purity of color and sheen that instantly makes you want to touch them. The shapes live somewhere between Asian design and American kitchen vintage. For me, they are emotional pieces.

But back to that coffee. I have a great dark roasted Ethiopian Sumatra/Mocha Java blend. How many sugars for you? (A little tip: Put unused coffee in ice trays and freeze them. By using frozen coffee ice cubes instead of frozen water your coffee becomes less deluted as the coffee ice melts.)

It's in the stars. Bless my stars. I saw stars. Lucky star, rising star, starry eyed. Born under a lucky star. The August Hudson Valley Etsy Team's birthdays belong to Debi Brown, Drusella Kehl and Esther Aguirre. Leo the Lion is a sign ruled by the Sun and it's element is fire. Gold is it's color and metal and Leos are known to be creative, artistic, colorful and love an audience. Generous, honest and warm hearted people born under this star, are the friend that can shine up the bluest of days and make us forget what on earth we were so bummed out about.

Debi of Tinks Treasures makes affordable jewelry that is bright and cheerful (like Debi herself) and makes you feel shiny. Notice how often red (fire) and gold play a part in her creations. Hearts show up often in her jewelry expressing her honest loving nature. The artist known as Drusella paints whimsical scenes starring rats making those that are phobic forget that rats can be anything other than charming. She watercolors pet portraits and children, all reflecting the warmth and generosity that is Leo. Esther of Xocolati makes artisenal chocolates and feels that chocolate "should be given out free of charge just to make people's lives more enjoyable". There are a few stories in literature that continue to inspire the imaginations of artists across time and Alice in Wonderland is one of them. When those visions are successful they just scream artistry. That's how I feel about this Alice from knotbygranma. Look at her! She's zany, crazy, beautiful - a totem to the entire story! On the base, the Cheshire Cat then the hookah smoking caterpillar holding Alice's head that is clearly struggling with the complicated reality that is down the rabbit hole. Decked out with the Mad Hatter's hat and a heart charm from the Queen. This is an art doll worthy of any collector's cabinet. I love the humor, the bright colors and textures and just how much pure fun this piece exudes. And by the way, just between us, I feel how she looks more often than I'd like to admit.
